Please take this cat..

Yesterday morning we found a kitten near the pool when we went swimming. It's small and cute and clearly belongs to someone because it has a little red collar and a bell.

We've taken it home and are trying to find its owners but no luck so far. Hopefully soon. As cute as it is, we're not really prepared for cat ownership, primarily because of the dogs! Arrow got a sneak peek at her this morning and made a dash for her. Christian almost blew both his knees out flying at him and grabbing him before he got to the cat. Of course, the cat ran under the bed and it's highly unlikely Arrow would have been able to do anything but still... The high stress isn't worth it...!

We'll put an ad in the paper today. The good news is that since I volunteer with Gwinnett Humane, they can help me place the cat if we don't find owners. It's strange though. I'm sure somewhere there's a kid missing this kitten.

I'm not sure why though. I don't get the appeal. I mean, don't get me wrong. The kitten is cute, that's for sure. You can't walk into the room that we're keeping her in without her pouncing on your feet. However, she's trying to attack them. And the only reason it's cute is because she's still got little helpless kitty claws and teeth so she can't really do any damage. But, the single-minded homicidal focus won't go away as she gets older. And she will have big, bad claws and teeth which WILL hurt.

I think cat owners just bond with the animal and so they find it easier to forget that they're actually ripping into their wrists with 1 inch claws and that blood spurting is actually real. It made me wonder why cats are so different from dogs. They're both carnivores and predators. I guess it's because over the years, a lot of the biting and scratching has been bred out of dogs.

I mean, dogs have actual jobs. But you wouldn't see Mr. Whiskers rounding up sheep or hiking through the Alps with a flask of brandy around its neck... Nobody bothered to breed them for actual useful skills. My guess is nobody really considered it as a viable option. It's not like when Timmy fell into a well, he called for Ms. Kitty Fantastico...

Anyway, hopefully someone will claim this kitten soon. I'll keep you posted on the progress !

I found the Pratchett quote that goes with this:

“If cats looked like frogs we’d realize what nasty, cruel little bastards they are.” - Terry Pratchett, “Lords and Ladies”
